In the Colours Assembly today the following children received their French medals:

Year 4 - Eshan Shah
Year 5 - Evie Holder
Year 6 - Kaiya Shah

All three pupils have shown a keen interest in the subject and have produced beautiful written work in accurate French, In oral work all three have demonstrated a great flair for pronunciation and recall of the target material.  Well done indeed to our three medal-winning linguists!

Bonjour a tous!  Things are busy as usual in the Languages Department:  first, very warm congratulations to Eshan, Austin and Emily in Year 4 for completing the first part of the Vocabexpress programme.  Large bars of chocolate are winging their way toward you!
Year 6 continue to prepare for the exciting French Trip by practising useful vocabulary and scenarios and by filling in their Carnet Jaune which they can use during their stay.Watch this space to see further developments!
Year 5 have completed their French music posters and can be very proud of the beautiful results as you can see in the photographs attached.

Salut! Greetings from the Language Department. Here is today's news about our exciting Open morning activities:

Open Morning:  The Language Department

On Thursday Feb.9^th 2017 the Language Department played host to twelve Year 5 pupils who spent a busy and enjoyable two hours working through a variety of French activities.

We sat in a circle and practised many of our basic skills e.g. asking Comment t’appelles-tu and answering Je m’appelle ... Pupils then worked with a partner to take turns asking each other a long list of basic questions.  As an extension activity, they came up with good ideas for additional questions.

Then we looked at the fascinating collection of French books which Rohan had kindly brought in.  These included a delightful penguin-shaped book about the penguin who could not dance – we followed the instructions and tried the dance ourselves!  Levez-vous! Tapez le pied! Sautez en l’air!

Then we spent some time revising and practising our French sounds, rounding off this activity with a terrible tongue-twister:  Combien de sous sont ces saucissons-ci?  Ces saucissons-ci sont six sous.  Have a go!!

We then turned our attention to a cafe sketch in which pupils, working with a partner, had to fit six speeches into the correct speech bubble.  We then acted out the resultant scenario.

Time then for a song:  “Le Vieux Macdonald”, an old favourite.  We then investigated a range of animal sounds in French and produced a set of sounds and pictures for display.

How quickly the time went! We only had time to watch our favourite “super dog” video and play some interactive games based on the animal topic.  Well done to Year 5 French students for working with such enthusiasm!  Bravo Evie Holder, Amelia Arthurton, Rohan Appadu, Raj Sisodia, Emily Anderson, Eliana Russo, Felicity Branton, Ruben Baker, Lawrence Yates, Jessica Dean, Edmund Kavati and Felix Bowling!

Spring Term news so far ....

Salut!  Bonjour!  Hola, buenos dias! salvete!

An excellent start to the term thanks to Jemima (6T) and Georgie Sakkalli (6D) who have completed the Vocabexpress programme, including the new French to French section.  Their grand totasl now stands at 9,900 marks each.  Phew, what a score!  Well done, Jemima and Georgie!

Year 5 Latinists have made an excellent start on the Roman coins topic.  They have studied some of the coins which were found on Copthill land and are beginning to understand the iconography and text of these coins.  They have come up with some fascinating lines of research.  If you would like to find out more about this and other finds in the area here is an excellent website for the county archaeologists:

4L are now starting their second component of Spanish.  They have found out all about Los Tres Reyes - the three kings who bring Christmas presents to Spanish children.  Next they will be learning all about celebrating birthdays in Spain - Feliz cumpleanos!

Bonjour from the Language Department - only two more weeks left until the end of term, so off we go!  Vas-y!

Year 4 pupils have been working enthusiastically on the Vocabexpress site - keep up the good work!  They have been learning about shops with the help of a super website:

From the topic menu select "places", then select "shops"

Year 5 have extended their Spanish topic "en la clase" by using the sister website:
www.spanish-games.net
Select "activities" from the menu, then select "objects".  This will give you the chance to reinforce and extend your knowledge of classroom objects.
And a fun game for all the family:  "en mi mochila tengo..." which is basically a version of "I packed my bag and in it I put..  Enjoy!

Year 6 have extended their knowledge of reflexive verbs, as part of the "daily routine" topic.  This is a tricky thing to get your head round.  Have a look at:

Choose the GCSE section because it has a grammar area where you can watch a video about the reflexive verb and do an on-line test.  Bonne chance!

Finally, thanks to Les Super-Six for teaching the upper school a delightful French carol "Etoile de Noel".

WEEK 11

Greetings from the Language Department with all  the latest news and info. 

 

Year 6 are working hard on the topic of "Daily Routine".  They are learning to combine time with an activity - for example:  Il joue au foot a midi.  If you would like to practise this topic have a look on www.french-games.net and select the first item "Activity".  There you will find plenty of practice games and exercises to hone your skills.  Enjoy!

Year 5 might like to look at Crickweb.  Select KS2 French and have a go at the big crossword.  Bonne chance!  Congratulations to Felix Bowling, our language Star of the week!

This week we also congratulate Elliot Brittan of 4L for completing the first section of Vocabexpress.  he has scored more than 7,000 points!  Enjoy that chocolate bar, Elliot - you deserve it!  My challenge this weekend to Year 4 is to spend at least 10 minutes on Saturday and Sunday building up your score.

Salve! as our friends the Romans would say.  Here is a small selection of photographs to give a flavour of the Classical Morning - enjoy!

Copthill Classical Morning 2016-11-15

On Monday Nov.14^th 2016 Year 5 pupils from Copthill welcomed visitors from SGHS to share in a morning of Classical activities.  Working in three groups, pupils moved through a range of activities, designed to enhance and extend their knowledge of Latin and the culture of Ancient Rome.

The first activity, “Myths and Maths”, challenged pupils to tackle a variety of maths problems with a Classical twist.  Year 5 are certainly confident about their Roman numerals now!

In the second activity pupils were shown how to make a door sign which had messages in Latin. For example, if your visitor is not welcome you might turn the dial to “dormio” – I am sleeping; or maybe “scribo” – I am busy writing!  But if you are happy to receive visitors you turn to “intrate” – come on in!  The door signs were then decorated with a range of colourful Roman images.

The third activity invited pupils to explore a range of on-line sites, guided by their Year 10 helpers.  These included bbc primary history/romans and the famous www.mrdonn/romans.

After break we gathered together to watch a Youtube video of the story of Pandora and Prometheus.  Then we split into groups to work out a dramatic scene, based on a section of the story.  What imaginative renditions we saw - look at Zeus thundering down from his mountain top!

After lunch it was time to say goodbye to our visitors.  Thank you very much Mrs. Wilson and Y10 Stamford girls for all your help and input.
