Y6 Visit to The Warning Zone - Tuesday 15th October 2019

The Year 6 children travelled to Leicester on Tuesday to visit the Warning Zone. This educational visit is to make the children aware of the ongoing risks of online safety and staying safe in normal day-to-day life situations.

Whilst the children are continually monitored and educated about the risks and staying safe online at Copthill, it becomes even more paramount as they bring an end to their primary school education and enter into a bigger world of online activities which they need to be made aware of.

The day began with the children being put into small groups and the morning consisted of a series of activities and dramatised scenarios that were all linked to, and based around staying safe online. The children rotated around 6 different activities before they stopped for lunch.

The afternoon activities were based on ‘real life’ scenarios such as:

  • Fire risk in the home
  • Safety on building sites & electricity
  • Alcohol & Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Personal Safety
  • Risk around water
  • Road safety
  • Arson & Criminal Damage
  • Risk around Railways

The children really enjoyed the afternoon sessions and engaged very well with their group guide and getting involved with any kind of role play and discussions was evident to see as we walked around each of the 8 zones.

The children will no doubt discuss the day with you and it will have a profound effect on many of them as they embark on their secondary school education where they must take the knowledge & understanding with them in staying safe online and their general knowledge and common sense in real life, everyday risks that we all have to conquer at some point in our lives.

The children seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day, which is an excellent day out and is very informative, whilst being fun and enjoyable throughout the day. They were impeccably well behaved and a credit to Copthill School.

Y5 Forest school filtration

Check out the photos of Y5's investigating natural filtration in their forest school science session today- using charcoal, sand and other natural ingredients to filter their water enough to make Mr Teesdale a cup of tea from dirty river water!

Y5 Spanish Fiesta

As part of their ‘fiesta’ topic, Y5 have immersed themselves in their very own Fiesta! They tried traditional Spanish foods including el chorizo, las tortillas, la salsa, la guacamole y las patatas bravas! After giving their opinions, they then played the traditional Spanish game of Piñata! Muy Bien!

Y6 cook Spanish Paella over the fire

Y6 used a Spanish recipe to translate key words including cooking instructions, ingredients and colours. Everybody worked as a team to add the verduras in slowly (pasito!) and let the rice (arroz) bubble slowly over the fire. We also discussed other paella recipes and differences we could make e.g. by adding seafood or chorizo.

After it had cooked, we were able to try the Paella and give our opinions in Spanish. Me gusta mucho! Lots of us then took the recipes home to try again.

Y6 investigate the rock cycle!

Y6 had fun investigating the rock cycle and the different changes rocks journey through as they change from igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic stages. We used 'starburst' to make this happen quickly ourselves.

Y5 investigate dry ice!

As part of their 'Abracadabra' topic in science, learning all about changing states, Y5 explored the world of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice).
We talked all about sublimation- turning from a solid straight to a gas- then watched it in action, investigating what happened when we added water and fairy liquid. Finally, we made our own fizzy apple juice and frozen blackberries!

Y6 CCS Gold Award Winners 2019

This year the CCS gold award winners were rewarded for their efforts with a trip to the Aqua Park at Rutland Water.

Some had been before but all were looking forward to a fun and exciting time on all the inflatable obstacles there were. Some were jumping from 5 metres, others from 2 or 3 and some doing the big slides. Many overcoming some of the fears and anxieties they had beforehand! This was fantastic to see!

After the main event, the children then had a picnic lunch which was followed by some participating in a football match and others partaking in circle games whilst they enjoyed their lollies!

There were even parachutist's landing into the water for them to watch also.

A very fun-filled day out for the CCS gold award winners and congratulations to you all!

Thank you to Mr Thomas, Mr Howitt & Miss Needham for attending, who also enjoyed it as much as the children did!
